Afterimages from unseen stimuli
Observers adapted to a field of randomly coloured twinkling tiles, in which was embedded a faint, subthreshold green letter. Observers failed to discern this letter, but they readily reported its pink afterimage afterwards. This demonstrates a storage of changing colours over time; adaptation occurs for the average of each retinal point.
متن کاملThe unseen color aftereffect of an unseen stimulus: insight from blindsight into mechanisms of color afterimages.
We show here that, in the absence of a direct geniculostriate input in human subjects, causing loss of sight in the visual half-field contralateral to the damage, the pupil responds selectively to chromatic modulation toward the long-wavelength (red) region of the spectrum locus even when the stimulus is isoluminant for both rods and cones and entirely restricted to the subjects' "blind" hemifi...
متن کاملUnseen stimuli modulate conscious visual experience: evidence from inter-hemispheric summation.
Emotional facial expression can be discriminated despite extensive lesions of striate cortex. Here we report differential performance with recognition of facial stimuli in the intact visual field depending on simultaneous presentation of congruent or incongruent stimuli in the blind field. Three experiments were based on inter-hemispheric summation. Redundant stimulation in the blind field led ...
متن کاملLearning from Unseen Data
The learner of Lignos et al. (2009) attained excellent performance in English in Morpho Challenge 2009, but its reliance on minimal word pairs in the input to learn which words a rule applies to led to poor performance in other languages. We demonstrate that this learner can perform well across a broader set of languages if it works to infer word forms unseen in the data. We evaluate approaches...
متن کاملNegative Afterimages From Flicker-Augmented Colors
A patch that alternates between two hues such as dark green and light blue looks greenish on a light gray surround and bluish on a dark gray surround ("flicker-augmented contrast"). Thus, when an edge alternates between two hues in the same location, the visual system selects the more salient hue-the one with the higher Michelson contrast. However, the afterimage is the same pink, driven by the...
